The picturesque grounds at the Water Mill have inspired many romances.

The most notorious being in the 19th century. A daughter of the Mill owner fell in love with the mill labourer, Mr Scott. This was a highly unacceptable match and disapproved of by her father, Mr Way. The couple decided to elope and one night the daughter climbed out of the window of the Mill House and down a ladder. They rowed with friends to the mainland and caught the milk train to London. The couple persuaded a Parson to marry them after the banns were read.

At the end of the ceremony, her father who had been in hot pursuit, burst into the church and found that he was too late and the marriage could not be undone.
